William Gilbert

About 10 years ago when I was 62, I developed an infection in both legs that ended up in them both being amputated below the knee.  I was in the hospital for an extended period to recover from the infection and the amputations.  One day I had a visit from Shane Coltrain from Orthotics and Prosthetics East.  We talked for awhile and he told me he was an amputee too.  I was encouraged to see Shane living a normal life despite his prosthetic and that matched my attitude of being determined not to let such a thing define who I was.  Shane told me I would be able to be fitted for new legs.  He asked me what I wanted to be able to do.  I told him I wanted to be able to walk freely, to golf and to climb a stepladder.  He asked me how I felt about 2 out of 3.
Shane has been my prosthetist ever since.  I will always remember the joy on the day my first set of prosthetics were fitted to me and I was able to stand up from the wheelchair.  Today, thanks to Shane and his staff, I am able to live my life and do all the things I want to do.  I drive the car with no aids, I walk without even a cane, and I golf.  The prosthetics allow me to function without restrictions, and I am grateful.
The Orthotics and Prosthetics East staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the latest developments and features in prosthetics and bring that to fit the prosthetic that best serves the life you want to live.  In my case that meant a torsion insert that allowed me to swing a golf club. Perhaps the best recommendation I can offer is that they seek to serve you personally, not just as appliance mechanics.  I feel fortunate to have Shane as my friend and prosthetist.
